Better Protection for Cops on the Front Line
Four shooting incidents across Sydney in one night recently highlighted the need for police officers to have access to high-quality safety equipment such as bullet-resistant vests.
Police Officers in NSW are currently using bullet resistant vests that are around 20 years old – well beyond the manufacturer’s five-year warranty period.
The vests are out-of-date, heavy and only come in ‘extra large’.
The failure to update critical protective equipment such as bullet-resistant vests is potentially putting the lives of police officers at risk.
As we all have seen, shootings are happening all too often in Sydney, and the risk of officers being shot is very real.
Investment in modern bullet-resistant vests was identified as a priority in the Police Association’s pre-election submission to the major state political parties, which was released in December.
In recent years there have been enormous advances in bullet resistant technologies – including the development of new fibre and composite materials for use in protective vests.
These advances have led to lighter vests that provide better protection for the wearer.
At the same time, more powerful guns have also been developed, which means the need for high-tech protective equipment has increased.
When you’re dealing with firearms, every little bit of protection could be the difference between life and death.
It’s time the old bullet-resistant vests were phased out and replaced by up-to-date equipment for police officers across NSW.

Totally agree with our President’s comments. We have recently been provided with load bearing vests which are great for frontline police. However, we urgently need modern high tech shirts (especially in the Northern Region of NSW) to combat humidity and heat. If we can get a breathable light weight but professional looking dark blue coloured shirt to replace the marle blue shirt we might be able to wear the bullet resistant vests. Unfortunately, police in the Far North Coast of NSW are ceasing to use the vital load bearing vests because it’s simply to hot. It’s exacerbated by the non-breatheable heavy cargo pants as well.
