Education news
Bring back Penrith South early intervention class
Every child has the right to an education. In NSW every child will be able to receive an education; however, if they have a disability then they are not guaranteed an education that will meet their needs.
100 years on, the State Library does more than house books
As the NSW State Library celebrates its 100th birthday, it’s worth celebrating not only the wealth of knowledge the library houses and multitude of services it offers, but also the significance the State Library has had in Australia’s history.
Not only does the State Library hold some of our country’s most important historical documents, its workforce has also made history – winning the state’s first pay equity case.
All schools need permanent Learning Support Officers
Like many other grandparents in New South Wales I saw my grandsons go back to school for another year last week. It’s always an exciting time of year and I’m looking forward to hearing all about what they learn and all the new friends they will make this year. But back-to-school time is always a reminder too, of all the hard work our school support staff, teachers and principals will do to help our children through another year of school.
Recognising Our Unsung Education Heroes
School support staff are the unsung heroes of our education system.
They run the administration offices, support teachers in libraries, science labs, applied technology, tend the school grounds and assist teachers to look after indigenous students and students with learning difficulties.
Petition presented to Minister for Education
This year the Public Service Association has been running the Students Need Us campaign, aimed at raising professional standards for all School Administrative and Support Staff (SAS Staff) in NSW public schools.
Support staff in schools include:
- • Administrative Managers and Officers
- • School Learning Support Officers
- • General Assistants
- • Aboriginal Education Officers
Helping Our Kids Through School
Surviving school is challenging enough for most children, but for children with disabilities and special needs it can be even more difficult.
Learning Support Officers (formerly known as Teacher’s Aides) perform a vital role in helping these children negotiate their way through the school experience.
Around 70 per cent of Learning Support Officers, however, are employed on a temporary basis, with no security of tenure.
A is for Autonomy, B is for Bad
Autonomy: a harmless enough word, but it’s caused raging debates in education for decades.
Under Premier Nick Greiner, the Liberal Government developed its ‘school renewal’ program, a pseudo-privatisation campaign aimed at breaking up the school system in NSW.
The Greiner Government wanted to give school principals the power to manage their own school budgets, including the hiring and firing of teaching staff: self-governing schools.
