2010: the Year of public services
2010 is already shaping up as the year of public services with the announcement by the NSW Government that Sydney Ferries will remain in community hands.
Two big multinational companies had vied for control of the iconic service but at the end of the day the Government decided the public sector would continue to do a better job.
But it wasn’t a decision the State Government came to entirely of its own accord.
The decision came off the back of a passionate campaign lead by ferry workers and commuters and members of the local community who were concerned private ownership over Sydney Ferries would send the operation backwards.
Community groups like Save Our Sydney Ferries rallied around their treasured service organising public meetings, petitions and even lobbying their local MPs.
